The following painful and alarming news has just been received from Napier:— At three o'clock on Monday morning, the escaped Chatham Island prisoners entered Poverty Bay. They burnt every homestead belonging to the Europeans, and murdered all the persons whom they caught. Twenty-eight persons are known to have been murdered. Many others are missing. Some made their escape to Auckland and to Napier in two coasting vessels which were observed passing, and to which they put off in boats, or signalled for assistance. A few took refuge in Turahga. Among the murdered are Major Biggs, and his wife, his child, and his servant; Captain Wilson, with his wife, child, and servant; Mr. Dodd ; Mr. Peppard and servant; Mr. Nairn, wife and child ; Mrs. M'Culloch and child ; Mr. Caddie ; Mr. Pedbnry ; Lieut Walsh, with his child ; and Mrs. Maine.
The settlement has been completely destroyed.
