RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
SATURDA.Y. (Before J. Giles, Esq., E. M.J Denis Malony was brought up by Constable Kooke, charged with committing a grievous assault on bis wife by cutting her throat with a tableknife at 3 o'clock this morning. George James Rooke, Constable, said—At a little past three this morning a man named William Penny came to the Camp and gave me information on which I proceeded to the house of the prisoner, at the Orawaiti. I saw Mr Boy lan and Miss Lucy Spring. I requested to see Mrs Malony, the prisoner's wife. I saw Mrs Malony in an inner room sitting before the fire ; there was a cut on her face. Prisoner came into the room while I was there. I questioned her in his presence, and she told me that he had inflicted the wound with a knife ; the knife produced was afterwards given me by Mr.Boylan ; it had been put outside; it had* blood on it which was dry. She said it arose from some words they had had, and that he _ had done it wilfully ; this was iu his hearing. After the Doctor
had scon Mrs Malony I look prisoner in charge for doing his wife grievous bodily barm. Dr Thorpe said he had examined the wound, and it was four inches long and one inch deep- He thought Mrs Malony would bo able to attend on Monday, as the wound was not dangerous. The Inspector of Police asked for a remand until Monday, which his Worship granted. The 'prisoner was removed.
