THE STRANDING OF THE CERES.

(To tlie Editor of the Westport Times and Charleston ArgusJ Sir,—Your statement in Monday's issue respecting the stranding of the schooner Ceres i 3 altogether incorrect. In the first place, you state " that the tow-line parted." That is true; but you do not tell the cause. In the second place, you mention that " despite the most energetic efforts of Capt. Palmer she drifted on shore." I may say in respect to Captain Palmer's conduct that it was anything but a sailor's ; indeed, the greatest soldier ou a paddle-box would not have acted as he did. As regards the Kennedy, she never came near enough to hail; so it was utterly impossible to get a rope on board. In the third place, the tow-rope was a six-inch Manilla rope, and fit to tow a vessel twice the Ceres' tonnage to sea, had the captain of the Charles Edward used common discretion. Ido not intend to enter into particulars, but if you will insert this,

Tou will oblige, Joh>* Bkowjt, Master schooner Ceres. [We cannot see the incorrectness of our report. As to the tow-rope breaking, that is a fact admitted, and to that the present position of the schooner is attributable. The only doubt that Captain Brown raises is the conduct of Captain Palmer, which is a professional question that we are unable to speak with authority on.—Ed.
