It will be seen by an advertisement in another place, that a meeting of the subscribers to the Kynnersley Testimonial Fund, is called for this evening at seven o'clock precisely, at the Postoffice Hotel.
The steamer Waipara got into Brighton yesterday afternoon, and landed all her cargo without any difficulty. This favorite little steamer will be of great advantage to the merchants at Cnarleston and Brighton, as she can enter both places when the weather is at all favorable.
A prospecting party, numbering six, have been equipped by the following gentlemen : —Messrs Humphrey, Leslie, Dragicavitch, Trimble, and Morey, and intend proceeding up the Buller in a day or two. The expense of living, &c, is also defrayed by the above named gentlemen, and the party now only await a boat. We wish them every success, and consider this a step in the right direction. The trout ova recently brought over from Tasmania by Mr Huddleston, have been hatched in the ponds at the Government Buildings at Nelson. They are hardly an inch long, and are described by the Colonist as being gelatinous-looking creatures, with the rudimentary process of a backbone visible through their transparent bodies, and having attached to them the 'egg which constitutes theirnourishmentforthenextdayortwo. A new way of settling accounts seems to be coming into vogue in Charleston. A landlord, hearing that an old boarder of his—a well-known miner—had sold his share for a few hundreds, and was on the point of leaving the district, looked out for the gentleman, and inviting him into a little back parlour, locked the door. The actual particulars of what took place may never be known, but from the noise made, it was surmised that a hot argument was being indulged in, and the net result was that the landlord got payment of a debt of £3O, the other ' party' getting a receipt in full, in the shape of a couple of black eyes, but whether he will be contented to accept such in lieu of the usual stamped receipt is doubtful. The unlucky payee bad yet another settlement to make, for another of his creditors, who was in the house at the time, by threatening to adopt a simliar line of argument, succeeded in extracting cash in payment of his account to the tune of some £ls from the capacious and well-filled pockets of the lucky—or as he no doubt thought himself—unlucky digger. A typographical error, occurred in our Charleston Correspondent's letter publshed in "Wednesday's issue. The sum mentioned as being realised by a share recently soldinthe Cosmopolitan Company, should have been printed .£560, in place of £360. We observe that the wreck of the unfortunate cutter Satellite is to be sold by auction on Saturday, by Mr Munro, at his sale rooms in Moles worth street. This is in pursuance of a recommendation made by Captain Leech, Harbor Master, and Captain Anthon, of the schooner Ottawa, who have recently held a survey on the vessel. We understand that the two Armstrong guns which have been in use some time at Dunedin, by the Volun- ' teer Artillery Company, have recently j been taken possession of by the Grov- ! eminent, for the purpose of being , worked in active service in the North Island.
