An advertisement which appears in another column, cautions persons against removing any timber or materials belonging to the G-overn-ment, that may be washed ashore on the river or sea beach.
The s.s. Waipara ia announced to sail this day for Hokitika and intermediate ports, should the weather permit. She has been moored for the last few days in the lagoon, and has escaped the force of the fresh in the river. We learn from Addison's that the recent rain, has caused several claims to cave in, which in some instances, will render it necessary to sink new shafts, to work out the ground, In the claim of Cinnamon and. party, a large portion of the ground fell in, and they would have to sink two shafts in their claim, io enable them to set their elevator and wheel &c, in working order.
We are informed that the new ground which has been opened on German Terrace, is proving to bo of a most valuable character, and there are at present more men engaged on gold, than at any previous period on that terrace.
The foot bridge between German and Giles' Terraces has been swept away by the flood, and communication interrupted for the past three days, though the gorges between the river at any time runs rapidly, and the bed of it is by no means free from large boulders, so that crossing at present would be hazardous.
The weather last night was about as bad as it could well be. So on the principle, that when things arrive at the worst they must mend, we may now look for some improvement. The weatherwise may also find hope in the fact of their being a change in the moon to-day. Any who have been fascinated by the sort of life pictured in the descriptive letters from Fiji which have recently appeared in the newspapers, will shortly have an opportunity of visiting the islands so much talked of. That smart little vessel, the Alert, is announced to take her departure for the Fijian groupe, on or about the first proximo, and Captain M'Donald expects to make the run down in ten or twelve days.
