CALEDONIAN.

(FROM OTTR Offlf CORRESPONDENT.) The new ground opened at the Buller side of the Caledoniau Terrace has not as yet been properly tested. M'Laren and party are putting down a shaft at the eid of the terrace, for the purpose of finding out if the lead goes in that direction.

Marshall and party have completed their long tunnel, and deserve every credit for their work. The claims on Ballarat Terrace continue to give the parties occupied in them a fair yield of amalgam for their lab >rs.

On Poverty Terrace, all hands have left with the exception of Morley and party, who are doing fairly. It is not improbable that some of the tunnels on this terrace which have been abandoned, will be again taken up by parties returning from Auckland. On German Terrace, Dick man and party have worked out their old tunnel on the front run, and are now working at a new tunnel for the back run, which is to be 900 feet in length, and will occupy them for three months, as some boulders have to be worked through, and blasting, &c, will be necessary. Langrish and party are putting in a tunnel with the expectation of striking the main bottom lead of gold, but have not gone in very far yet. West and party, who had a portion of Langrish and party's ground on the north side of the terrace have now abandoned it. The claims which have been taken up on the Buller side of the terrace are likely to prove valuable. Bonetti and party who are working Strange and party's claim, are making good wages. At Giles' Terrace, a share in a tunnel which has been only commenced a short time, and is 300 feet in, has been disposed of for £SO. Davis and party are washing, and will have a very good yield from their washdirt.

Evans and party are washing, but I am not aware how their washdirt will turn out.

M'Kenzie and party are making good progress with their long tunnel. At Deadinan's, M'Cracken and party have had a washing-up, and their claim is aaid to be one of the best in their neighborhood.

Mr G-raham has purchased a sharp in the claim next to the prospectors, known as that of M'Farlaue and party. It will take them a few weeks more before they can reach the lead of gold, their progress must necessarily be slow in consequence of the rocky nature of the ground they have to penetrate. Farther north towards the "Waimongaroa a claim had Jo be abandoned last week, because the parties working at it were unable to procure tucker. In any of this ground it is not difficult to procure some gold, but the object of the diggers appears to be the striking of the same run as M'Cracken and party have come on. On the Beach there are more men than usual working, although it can hardly be termed working, it is such a very light description of labor. I have heard of a caee where some men left

their claim with only two men, an 1 went and worked on the beach themselves, with the hope of being able to make as much as would procure provisions for the whole party to work the claim until they had given the ground a fair trial.

Both on the Caledonian and German Terraces, some parties washing tailings are making as much by their occupation as some of the claim-holders. A good many are out prospecting at present, and it is not by any means improbable that they may come on some new ground iu this locality.
