THE UPPER THAMES. We extract the following from our Auckland'files to hand per steamer Nelson "We have made particular enquiries to-day at the offices of the Civil Commissioners and the Agent of the Genaral Government, and so far as we can learn, the only foundation for a report current about town to-day that Mr Mackay had succeeded in getting the natives to open lip the country around Ohinemura to European prospectors is the receipt of a private letter from a gentleman at the Thames, who states that from Mr. Mackay's prolonged absence with Te Hira's people at Ohinemura the most favourable results may be anticipated. This is so far satisfactory, although it falls far short of thereportthatthecountry was actually opened up already. There would appear, however, to be good reason to think that the rumour is merely anticipatory of what will be an established fact, but it is well not to be too sure so long as the matter is in doubt. Upon Mr Makay's return from the Upper Thames, where no doubt his diplomatic skill with the natives has been exercised to the best advantage, we shall no doubt receive authentic intelligence of the result of his mission.
