INTERCOLONIAL NEWS.
VICTOBIA, A very melancholy occurrence happened last week at Dhinamans-flat and formed the suhject of a coroner's inquest on Thursday. It appeared that a Mr Stewart, residing in that locality, went to assist a neighbour named Darke, whose husband had been killed a day or two previous by a mining accident. On returning to her house the next day, Mrs Stewart tound her husband sitting on the sofa with his head on his right arm on the table, quite dead. From the evidence adduced, it was shown that deceased though it apparent health, was given to drmkmg " bouts » in one of whichhe died. The verdict was, that" deceased died of serous apoplexy, induced by intemperance." i J Richard Q-oodhind, malt and hop merchant, flinders-lane, was commit
ted for trial on Thursday Bth iust. at the City Court, on the charge of fraudulently converting to his own Use an acceptance of £75, which he had received on account of Messrs Council, Watson, and Hogarth, merchants. . . The body of Mr Ellis, who was billed eleven weeks ago through the cavingin of the United El Dorado Company's claim (M'Evoy's, Beechworth), was discovered on Sunday morning week by the search party. As mnch as £IOOO had been spent in the search. We {Argus) understand that the Victorian Meat Preserving Company are now at work in supplying orders, after nearly twelve months spent in experimenting, sending trial samples to Urope, India, China, &c. It was this company's meat mainly, we are informed, which Mr Tallerman took with him to London, and letters have been shown to us which speak highly of the condition in which it arrived at home, being then as sound as when packed in Melbourne. The opinion of practical men in London appears to be that there will scarcely be a limit to its consumption there, as tne company will be able to sell it at a very reasonable rate, while securing for themselves a handsome return. A considerable shipment has just been made by the Bcnvenue, for the London market. The Portlaw takes a considerable quantity to Calcutta, and the Tekli has aboard a consignment for China. Captain Tonkin, of tho Norfolk, reports that he opened and used two casks of it in the tropics on his last passage home, and that it proved to be an excellent change from the other meats on board giving every satisfaction. We are glad to find, therefore, that this important and most useful branch of business is now in full operation.
