Hokitika, Saturday. The Tararua and Alhambra have arrived. Neither of the channels are in good order. Business is dull. There is no great alteration in prices to report. Brandy and potatoes are a shade easier. Archibald Bonar died yesterday (Friday). At the close of the Criminal business yesterday, His Honor, Judge Richmond, adjourned the Court till next Thursday, and in doing so, commented severely on the fact of lawyers in Hokitika being so negligent in the in conduct of their business. The adjournment was rendered necessary through the civil cases not being prepared for trial. His Honor stated that such conduct would not be tolerated in future, and that he would take steps to make the legal profession pay for their remissness. Mark Simon, charged with having attempted to commit suicide, was acquitted, and much surprise was expressed at the refusal of the Resident Magistrate, Mr Fitzgerald, to hear evidence as to the prisoner's state of mind, in the first instance. It is rumored that the ' Grey River Argus' is about to start a newspaper in Hokitika. Hokitika, Tuesday. Archibald Bonar, who died on Saturday night, was buried to-day, and the funeral was the largest ever known in Westland. The cortege was followed by all the volunteers, and about two hundred citizens, and he was buried with military honors. Every place of business was closed in token of respect for the deceased. The Otago with the English mail on board, arrived at Lyttelton to-day (the 15th). The Alhambra and Tararua left here for Greymouth yesterday, and were tendered there this morning. They returned and will sail to-morrow. Two hundred pounds were voted by the Municipal Council for closing up the old channel. The new channel is all but impassable. A telegram received from Wellington states that a rather serious mistake has been made by Mr Hall in his financial statement in calculating the liabilities of Westland. Mr Harrison M.H.R. has withdrawn his acceptance of £ISOO on behalf of Westland, and Ministers have agreed to give £20,000. A meeting will be held in Hokitika to-morrow, to takeinto consideration the financial position of Westland. Another meeting is to be held regarding the decision of the Waste Lands Commissioners respectinglands.
