IS IT LAW.

Sir. In your issue of the 7th inst. you were kind enough to draw the attention of the public to my illegal detention it gaol, for £.lO. 4s. 6d poundage fees, &c. Since then, lam happy to inform you that the amount ha"s dwindled down to £5. ss. 6d. and my detention is now made subject to aii order for my discharge from the Supreme Court at Nelson, an applicahaving been made by me, at the suggestion of Joseph Giles, Esq., a copy of which I enclose. This is certainly a new phase in my case altogether. Firstly, my creditor orders my discharge, and £lO. ss. 6d. is demanded from me. Secondly, the £lO. ss. 6d. is found tobe a mistake, and £5. ss. 6d. is substituted, certainly not an insignificant item to a poor debtor. Finding I am not able to pay the £5. ss. Cd., an official is found to take an affidavit that my creditors will not pay any more maintenance for me, and nothing is said in the affidavit about his giving an order for my discharge, nor the demand that has been made upon rne for the two different sums of money. Now Sir it is well known that His Honor Judge Richmond is now in Hokitika, so that in all probability before an answer can be received from the Supreme Court my time will have expired. In conclusion I may say with truth that several debtors have been released from the gaol by orders of detaining creditors,- without any fees being paid, or any order required from a Supreme Court. So I may truly subscribe myself. A Sis-ole Victim. Westport Gaol, September 12. 1869.
