When the telegraph was opened to Westport the proprietors of the "Westport Times" at once wrote to the head of the Telegraphic Department, in reference to the necessity there was for furnishing the press with shipping telegrams. As a matter of course, through there being no direct postal communication, the letter took some time to find its way to head quarters but it did so eventually, and we have to acknowledge the subjoined courteous telegram received by us yesterday.—" Messrs Bain an'' Tyrrell, Times Office, Westport.—Tour letter has been received. I have instructed Westport, Charleston, G-reymouth, Hokitika aadChristehurch, to exchange shipping telegrams. Tou will therefore get all steamers leaving "Wellington, Nelson, and Dunedin, as well, besides your own local trade.— Charts Lemon, General Manager." The above will, we are sure, prove that the Telegraph authorities are anxious to serve the public, and the boon thus accorded will be of no small value to business men. We need only say that for his prompt action, Mr Lemon has earned the best thanks of the mercantile community of Westport.
