[By Electric Telegraph.] Hokitika, Monday. Later Victorian files state that Tim Whiffler and the Barb are the favorites for the Metropolitan, Coquette for the Derby. Mr Parkes, Colonial Secretary, states that the Government of New South Wales are in possession of affidavits, proving that the assassination of the Duke of Edinburgh was preconcerted. One man has been murdered to prevent him from disclosing the conspiracy The Australian Steam Navigation Company propose laying on a steamer between Sydney and the Eijis. The new channel at Hokitika is good and easily worked. The Mary Cumming has been got safely off the Spit. The Kennedy left at 2 p.m. with 20 passengers. Arrived—Aurora, from Dunedin ; Alma and Zephyr, from Melbourne. The Zephyr went ashore while in tow of the tug, but is expected to be got off when her cargo is discharged. The Gothenburg from Nelson, arrived at 4.30. p.m. Latest Hokitika quotations are:— Elour (Adelaide), £27; Provincial, £24 ; oats, 4s 3d ; chaff, £l7. Brandy is sixpence cheaper, Hennessy in bulk 8s 6d ; in case, 33s to 33s 6d. Melbourne quotations of August 26th are, Adelaide flour, £l9; Victorian, £l7 10s to £lB. Mauritius sugars range from 27s to 36s ; Hennessy's brandy case, 27s 6. Christchurch, Monday. The trial of Bain,, late clerk to the Bench here, came off before Judge Gresson. The prisonar was convicted and sentenced to three years imprisonment with hard labor. Numbers are leaving for Auckland and Brighton (?). The Auckland fever is very strong in Canterbury. Hokitika, "Wednesday. The Zephyr is again afloat, and safe alongside the wharf. The p. s. Waipara has arrived from the North. Mr Prosser was elected Mayor un. der the new Act, for three mouths. Carey and- Gilles, the well known merchants and auctioneers, are about to leave Westland. The Circuit Court commences tomorrowbefore Judge Richmond. There are no cases of any interest for trial. The Ocean Wave and Pilot have arrived from Melbourne. The new channel is in good order, and the weather splendid. DISASTROUS DEEEAT OE THE COLONIAL TROOPS.

[Bt Electric Telegkaph.] "Wellington, Thursday The Colony will grieve to hear that Yon Tempskey is dead, but he nobly •fell in battle. Brave Capt. Buck, his •equally brave fellow officers, Captain Palmer, Lieutenants Hastings and Hunter are also amongst the killed. Lieutenant Eowan is dangerously wounded. The names of the fourteen men killed are not recorded in the brief intelligence to hand. On Monday the Bth our force left Waihi at 4a. m. At 2p. m. encountered the enemy again at Te Ngutu-o-te-Manu, but this time they were thoroughly prepared to give a warm reception. There were not only rifle pits, but also tops of trees manned, and deadly volleys poured in upon our men who bravely pushed forward, cheered <on by their officers, and returned Are with murderous effect.
Twenty-seven Maoris bit the dust. How many of them were wounded we cannot say. The force retired in good order and preparing for another attack. Most of our officers and men were killed by Hauhaus, perched on tops of trees.
