We may remind those of our readen who may wish to have themselves rendered imperishable by carte de visite or other picture, that Mr T. Price, formerly of "Westport, is making a fortnight's stay here, and can be seen at his old quarters, next to Sloan's Clarendon Hotel. It was stated that all the mails of the Taranaki had been saved previous to her foundering, but there is reason to fear that a "Wellington mail is lost, for some official letters that were known to have been posted, and would be very unlikely to be miscarried in any way, have not been received by those for whom they were intended. Any persons expecting, and not having received letters from "Wellington, may therefore attribute the non-receipt of letters to this accident, rather tbn,n the the negligence of their correspondents The Odd-Fellows of Westport are making strenuous exertions to render their coming ball of Thursday next the most successful that has ever been given in this town. They are sparing neither pains nor expense, and in it they are ably assisted by Mr Emanuel, who will be the caterer on the occassion. In connection with this, we may observe, that a perfect farm yard full of splendid poultry, came by the Wallabi, and will be sacrificed on the occasion. The ball will be held in the drill-room, which will be decorated suitably for the occasion, one of the ornaments consisting of a splendid banner of the order, which has been sent from Nelson expressly for the festivity. The floor has already been planed, and will be in splendid order for dancing, and a supper-room about fifty feet in length has been improvised for the occasion with a large table running down the whole length, so that all the guests will be able to sit down at one time, and ample room will be afforded to every one. A cloak room for the ladies will be provided, and be in charge of a suitable person in the next building, and Mr Emanuel has received permission to enclose the footpath, so that ladies can pass to and fro, and be perfectly protected from the weather. A capital band has been engaged, with M. Schmidt as conductor, a sufficient guarante for the quality of the music, and in short no stone has been left unturned to render the gathering a pleasant one. "We may add that the entrance to the ball room is entirely distinct from the hotel, and will have no connection whatever with it.

The Otago ~News gives the following interesting particulars concerning the Fiji Islands:—The Tijis are divided into nine islands, all governed by King Thackambau. The "Wesleyans support Chief Tonga. The "Wesleyans are very strong at Fiji, especially in Chief Tonga's island, and the Catholics are said to be very weak. The Americans were formerly very strong, but they are withdrawing from the scone, Capt Stanley, the American Commodore, settles disputes between

the natives and the colonists. Captain Stanley lately deprived an American of all hi« property because the Yankee endeavoured to cheat a Fiji. Mr James Turner, lately of Dunedin, has erected a splendid hotel at the Fijis.
