CHARLESTON.

A preliminary meeting to concert measures for getting up a Race Meet" ing in Charleston, was held in Rooney's Hotel, on Thursday evening. There was a fair attendance present, though the very bad weather doubtless was the cause of many being absent. A preliminary committee, consisting of the chairman (Mr Strike), and Messrs Dwau, Roouey, and Neale, were deputed to canvass the town for subscriptions ; and a race committee was appointed, comprisiag the following gentlemen: Messrs Strike, Rooney, Brownlie, Twohill, Leitschenstein, Neale, Kennedy, Fenton, Shepherd, Sturt, Behan, Dwan, Cutten, and Mirfin (secretary). About £3O was subscribed in the room, and a general belief was expressed by those at the meeting, that no difficulty would be experienced in raising the requisite funds for a good race meeting in October. At the last weekly meeting of the Church of England Committee, it was stated that considerable progress had been made in building the Church and Parsonage. At the same time the Hon. Treasurer, having intimated that in order to meet the expenses of building, it would be necessary to have an accession of funds, it was determined that a sub-committee, consisting of Messrs Jones, Neale, Kennedy, Fox, and Greenwood, be appointed to make arrangements for giving a concert, in aid of the building fund, at the Four Mile, and also in town. In reference to the above, we understand arrangements have been made for giving a vocal and instrumental Concert at the Assembly Rooms, Four Mile Terrace, on Tuesday evening next, and we have little doubt that, though a novelty in itself, this country concert will realise a good sum to the Church.

No alteration has taken place in the shipping, in consequence of the heavy surf which has prevailed for the List few days. There are however, indications of a favorable change, and the skippers expect to get to sea torn M'row (Saturday). In the meanwhile they are amusing themselves with a little law business, touching who has to pay the damage occasioned by two of the vessels coming into collision, whereby one of them lost a bowsprit.
