The Westport Times AND CHARLESTON ARGUS. SATURDAY, AUGUST 29, 1868.

The monument in memory of the late Mr Joseph Yates of the bank of New South Wales, arrived by the Kennedy on her trip down from Nelson, and its erection is to be completed today. The railings have not yet arrived but will be here probably by the next boat. We are glad that this well deserved tribute to one so highly respected is about to take substantial form, though it needed no stone to keep the memory of Joseph Tates green amongst numbers on this coast. The Oddfellows Lodges of Westport as well as of Charleston, have determined on celebrating their anniversaries by holding balls at each place, that of Westport on the 10th, and of Charleston on the 15th proximo. Every arrangement that cau possibly be made for the comfort of the guests has been attended to, and vigilant ball com mi t-

tees sit, in order that no single item may be omitted that cau assist iu making the balls successful. The greatest care has been taken by the brethren to provide specially for the enjoyment of the fair sex, and also to exexclude all, with whom association would no tbe desirable. The most liberal arangements for supper &c. have been entered into, and card-rooms, we believe, will be provided for the unhappy wallflowers who cannot or do not dance on the occasion, everything in fact that is possible is being done to please everybody. We understand that Dr Giles E.M., Mr Lowe C.E. accompanied by Mr Pitt, solicitor, intend proceeding to Giles' Terrace to-day, and inspecting Messrs jSTicholls and party's claim about which there is so much litigation. We hope that some arrangement will be come to which will not retard work, the present weather is well adapted for tunnelling purposes The Grey River Argus reports :—"A little girl, four years of age, the daughter of Mr Joseph Satterthwaite, was drowned on Fridaylast, in attempting to cross the Waimea Creek, near Stafford Town, over a fallen tree. She slipped oft" into the creek, which was much swollen and washed away beyond assistance. The body was afterwards recoveerd, and an inquest held, when a verdict of " accidental death " was returned."

The " West Coast Times" of the 26th inst. announces that a member of the theatrical profession, Mr Sandford Fawcett, died rather suddenly this morning after a brief illness. The deceased was a comedian of considerable ability, he was much respected by his friends, and was kind hearted and generous even to a fault. The murder of a man who may be remembered in Greymouth, is thus announced by the Nashville Times, of the 22nd ult: —" Mr. Commissioner Clark held a magisterial inquiry in reference to the death, or murder, of William Kirkrousc, late of the West Coast, New Zealand, and well known

is * Billy the Bellman.' The bodywas found on tho Bonaro run by a shepherd of Messrs Jones and Co., and as there was nothing there to give rise to suspicion, the body was buried. But from reports which reached Mr. Clark, he thought it essential that the body should be exhumed, and that a medical investigation should be held at once. Accordingly, Mr. Commissioner Clark and Dr. Mason went out to the station, and on their way were shot at by bushrangers. From the investigation held, no one could but como to the conclusion that the poor man had been murdered. Several letters and photographs were found upon him, but no money."
