THE PIG NUISANCE.
(To the Editor of the Westport Times and CJiarleston Argvs) Sih,—lt was with no little pleasure that I saw you direct attention to the system of pig keeping in the inhabited parts of the town. I am a special sufferer from this cause, for within twenty feet of my premises there is a large pen full of pigs. Their manure together with the unconsumed offal, is cleared out every day and deposited alongside the pen, and there left ; so in addition to the existing nuisance, we have all the accumulated filth to be subjected to. What with the decomposed offal and the pig dung combined, on hot days a reeking stench arises, that must be endured before any one can have the least idea of its abomination, and that we shall long escape fever or other disease with this constantly uuder our noses, is more than can be expected. Is there any health officer ? If there is not, how is it ? Should not the police discharge those duties. I bear in mind Dr Giles' warning of a few weeks ago, how is it that others cannot remember it? "When some serious epidemic breaks out and death follows, some one is surely to blame, if the cause was preventible. There ought, and must be some power in Westport, that can put a stop to a practice, sure, sooner or later, to prove fatal to some of ourselves. Tours, &c, A. Luff. Westport, Aug. 26, 1868.
