The Westport Times AND CHARLESTON ARGUS. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 19, 1868.

Mr J. Munro sold the Tramway hetel yesterday, by public auction, for £lB5. The sale of produce ex Queeu of the Isles'by the same gentlemau, was postponed till Saturday next. fhe meeting called last night for the purpose of considering the advisability of electing a Progress committee in Westport, collapsed, only two representatives of the press, two leaseholders and three carters putting ia an appearance up to half-past eight o'clock, half-au-hour after the appointed time. Mr Tremble very naturally supposing that people did not intend to come, set the music going, aud the iloor was soon covered with dancers, instead of those interested in so important a question. Truly public spirit in Westportis dead beyond hope of resuscitation. Sad news is again to baud from the North. We extract the following from the" Westlaud Observer," of Monday last:—" The East Coast forces have been again repulsed with nine men killed, iucluding Captains Carr and Cumming. JLieinforceinents are urgently requested. Colonel Whitmore's forces appear to have attacked the escaped prisoners, and to have been defeated. Later accounts state that two men were killed and seven wounded. Captain j£epa ''lvetnp," of the Native Contingeut, has arrived at AVaugauui to offer the services of 250 Kupapas, as volunteers, to assist M'Donnell. News of McDonnell's attack is houriy expected." Captain Cumming it may be remembered, was in charge of the detachment of Armed Constabulary that visited "Westport. A private meeting convened by one of the gentlemen connected with the camp, by invitation, was held last night, for the purpose of takiug steps to collect subscriptions towards a testimonial to Mr Xynnersley on bis approaching resignation of office. We are iuformed that arrangements were made for canvassers to be appointed to the different diggings, and no doubt a handsome ha"vest will reward their exertions. At the same time perhaps it would have just been as well if public meetings had been called at the different places to initiate the movement.
