The Westport Times AND CHARLESTON ARGUS. MONDAY, AUGUST 10, 1868.
On Saturday, Richard Nicholls, of Giles' Terrace, applied at the Warden's Court for protection for a tunnel. Mr Nicholls has for some weeks back been engaged putting in a tunnel in the fifth claim on Giles' Terrace, which was to have been thirteen hundred feet in length. On Friday last the labors of the party met with a most pleasing check ; they had at this time reached the distance of 470 feet and came on a new lead of gold of the same class as that of the prospector's claim on the Caledonian. The gold is fine, and the washdirt eighteen inches in thickness and of a most productive class; as this lead of gold took a different direction from the run of which they werein quest, Mr Nicholls came to town to get protection for a new tunnel, and to procure some advice from the Warden on the matter generally. This new run of gold is situated on the face of Giles' Terrace, and now that two distinct leads of gold have been found and tested on this terrace,
a branch truck from Long's aeecommodation house at the VVestport aide of Poverty Terrace will be much needed, and be ol the most inexpensive class from the nature of the ground.
A meeting of the Athenaeum Committee was held on Saturday afternoon at the Court house, when several important matters were brought forward, amongst other things it \v:is resolved to apply for the £HK)tobe handed over by the Provincial Secretary to the treasurer, Mr Kerr. Three members of the committee were appoi ted as a sub-committee to order books, periodicals, &e. from Melbourn. The gentlemen selected were the Rev. W. Harvey, Dr Oiles and Mr Wh.tford. The amount of cash on hand was stated by the treasurer to be £OO. He mentioned that some of the canvassers from one of the best districts, had not yet reported their progress. A letter from Mr Ivynnersley was read stating that a site would be marked out on. the Camp Reserve for the Athenaeum on the return of the district surveyor, Mr Lowe, from Nelson. It is, we believe the intention of the committee to invite offers from Caledonian parties willing to become members of a sub-committee there, so as to obtain subscriptions and assist to distribute books, &c. in their district. In the Resident Magistrate's Court on Saturday the only business was the decision in the case of Cameron v. Dow-
ling, particulars of which appeared in our last issue. The Magistrate delivered an elaborate judgment, and gave a verdict for the plaintiff for £ls 18s Gd.
