CHEAPER BREAD.

To the Editor of the Westport Times and Charleston Argus. Sie, —As I know your columns are always open in advocacy of the poor man's grievances, I beg to call your attention to the following imposition on the part of the bakers of Charleston. At present they are charging 2 s for the 41b loaf, which between man and man is too much. But flour is now but £3O per ton here, and as each bag of 2001b weight of flour will turn out 70 loaves at 2s per loaf, it will leave the gross proceeds of one ton of flour £7O —or in other words profit £4o—without adding the large profit they have by the addition of yeast, potatoes, inferior flour and water, which it is well known they use in the manufacturing of bread, and which will swell their profits £lO more, or in other words, gross profits on one ton £SO; very nasty these bad times. I know for a fact that the 41b loaf is now selling for Is 6d on Nelson Creek, 35 miles up the Grrey river, carriage to this creek being £25 per ton from Greymouth. How is it we cannot have bread as cheap with carriage less than one-fourth this amount from Westport. Its a shame on the people of Charleston that that they have allowed themselves to be imposed upon for so long a time past. There was grumbling enough about the price of meat here for a long time, but that, thanks to Mr Nixon, butcher, Camp street, is reduced, which places it within the reach of every poor j man. Hoping some baker will follow j his example and bring down the price of bread at least to Is 6d, I am Sir, &c., A Poob Man. Charleston, Aug. 5. 1868.
