CHARLESTON NEWS.

A crime, which is happily rare in this district, was committed on Thursday evening. The premises of Messrs Skogland and Purcell being forcibly entered and drapery goods to the value of over a hundred pounds abstracted. The burglars appear to have taken advantage of the absence of Mr Skogland and his assistants at the hospital benefit perfoimances to effect an entry and carry off their spoil. Two men are in custody on suspicion but beyond a handkerchief or two found in their possession none of the articles stolen have yet been recovered. It was proclaimed by bellman on Saturday night that acertain Mistress Mary Hogan, of the Carriers Arms, had reduced the price of [nobblers to sixpence. Curiosity led us to the hostelry in question but we saw no crowd about the house or any indications of a rush of business at the bar and are disappointed to think tho spiri-

The first business will probably be to choose a Chairman and frame a set of rules to regulate future proceedings. Like other volunteer efforts, the success or future of the 'Commit* tee, as a public body, will greatly depend upon its leadership and as there are several good business men oil it there will be no difficulty we should thrift in selecting a competent ■ Chairman. There is no lack of work before the Committee if only they have the mind and determination to buckle to it, and we sincerely hope much good may result from this modest effort at improvement.
