RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

(Before J. Giles, Esq., B. M.) Saturday, July 18. DKUS'KENS'ESS. Eliazabeth Young who, appeared the previous day in a state of intoxication when called on as a witness, was brought up and sent to gaol for three days, the Magistrate remarking that to appear in such a state was contempt of Court. VAGRANCY. Ann Connolly was charged with being an idle and disorderly person, and with having no lawful visible means of support.

Inspector Franklyn said that the prisoner was a disgrace to "Westport, that the public were scandalised by her conduct, and asked the bench to punish her severely. Messrs Morrison, Turner, Collins, and Somner, who lived in the neighborhood of prisoner, gave her an exceedingly bad character and said, that by her general bad conduct and filthy language she was a pest and a nuisance to all the residents. Constable Rooke proved four previous convictions against her within the last twelve months. The Magistrate considered the prisoner thoroughly deserved three months' imprisonment, but regretted that he could not give it her, as no specific ! charge or particular act had been proved to bring the prisoner within tlte operation of the Vagrant Act. He therefore dismissed the case as the evidence would not warrant a convictionAt the same time he cautioned her tha if she came before him again, and was convicted, he would inflict a severe punishment. Kate Kent was brought up on the same charge but was discharged for the same reasons.
