The p.s. Charles Edward left Ilokitika on Monday last, and arrived at Greymouth at 4 p.m. She was there detained two tides, and did not. get away again till Wednesday. She arrived here at midnight, and crossed the bar at 7 a.m. The Ilokitika bar is reported to have plenty of water on it, but the channel is narrow. At the Grey there was a very heavy sea running, which smashed a portion of the port sponson. She left for Nelson at 5 o'clock last night. The s.s. John Penn, after her trip to the northward, returned by way of Nelson yesterday. During the whole run she encountered strong head winds, and crossed the bar early yesterday morning. She brings a number of returned passengers, miners, and others. She proceeds south this day.
