ELECTION OF HOSPITAL COMMITTEE.

According to notice the election of a Permanent Hospital Committee came off on Saturday, polls being taken at Westport, Addison's and the Caledonian, all subscribers of 10s being permitted to vote. Out of six candidates from the late Provisional Committee, three have been elected and three have failed but they have the great satisfaction of knowing that to their energy and unsparing industry the present very satisfactory position of hospital affairs is due, and the public have every right to recognise, as far as possible, the very valuable services they have rendered. The new Committee will begin with nearly £SOO subscribed money to which the Government will as Mr Kynnersley promised add twice the amount, and such a sum properly expended will be a blessing to many a poor sufferer in the district. Only one member from the outlying districts is returned, viz, Mr R. M'Farlane, of the Caledonian; Addison's failing to send in any local representative.*'*Mr Smyth however, may almost be said to be an Addison's man, for his chief business lies in that district and the people there may very safely leave their interests in his hands. Dr Giles, we are glad to say, very properly takes the premier place on the list, and from his professional knowledge, as well as in other respects, will prove a very valuable accession to the Committee. Mr Harris too, clerk of the Bench, is one of the chosen, and will also, we are sure, prove an excellent member. The remainder of the elected with the one exception, referred to above, are all in business, professionally or otherwise, in Westport,"and contain all the elements of a practical working body. The election at all the three places passed off without the least unpleasantness, and very little excitement. A great many availed themselves of the condition which gave them a vote on payment of 10s, and we expect a tolerably large addition will be made to the funds in consequence. We subjoin the returns from the three places as well as a total, sj that those curious can see in whose favor votes were recorded at each place. An official declaration of the poll will be made to-day as will be seen by advertisement, and the elected Committee no doubt will make arrangements for holding their first meeting.
