CHARLESTON NEWS.
At a meeting of the Church of England Building Committee, held at the Melbourne Hotel, on Thursday evening the members who, undertook to canva s the district, handed in their several subscriptionlists, showingthe following results; Messrs Allen and Neale, North side of Prince Street, paid £47 18s ; Messrs M'Coy and Grasqoie, South side of Princes Street, paid £l4 12s 6d, unpaid £8 ; Messrs Kennedy and Bain, Camp Street, paid £lB 19s 6d, unpaid £3 10 ; Mr Chas. Jenkins, Darkies Terace, Back Lead, &c., paid £6 8s 6d, unpaid, £25 18s6d Mr Hugh Jones, Four Mile, paid £l4 7s. The lists from the Candlelight district, were not received. Additions have to be made to all of the lists above referred to, owing to a number of persons called upon, being at the moment absent from home. It was agreed that plans and specifications should be invited for a Church capable of seating 150 persons, the total cost, not to exceed £250, allfittings included. Also, that a prize of five guineas, be awarded to the drawer of the design accepted by the Committee. Mr Jones suggested, the propriety of advertising the lists of subscriptions, but it was arranged to defer this, until the lists were completed. Mr Lightband mentioned that he had written to Mr Kynnersley respecting the site in the camp reserve, but that he was not yet in possession of any reply. This matter was postponed to next meeting. The Committee then adjourned to Friday week, to allow time for the subscription lists to be completed, and designs to be furnished. The Wardens Court, on Thursday, was occupied all the morning in hearing evidence in a case affecting the rights,
ofthe water race, known as M'Carthys which supplies a large number of claims on the Town lead. The prospectors,, complained of their dam and race being choked, and damaged by tailings from the terace workings, but it was found impossible to determine, the degree of responsibility amongst the many parties, who were said to be liable, and the case was dismissed, though it is likely to be brought forward again, in another form. We understand a singing class, has been formed in connection with the Revd. Mr White's church; it is under the direction of Mr Bain, who presides at the harmonium, and the first practice was held on Wednesday evening. This is a step in the right direction, and deserves every encouragement.
