A mail will be made up for Nelson, per s.s. Kennedy, this day, at 5 p.m. The Kev. D. Porteus, of the United Wesleyan Free Church, has arrived from Christchurch and will hold Divine Service next Sunday in Mr Eraser's school-room at 11 in the morning, and 6.30. in the evening. It is possible should adequate provision be made, by the members of this denomination, that Mr Porteus may be stationed here, and we need scarcely say that the advent of any minister of religion will be warmly welcomed. There was nothing whatever in the Eesident Magistrate's Court yesterday. Dr Giles held a Court at Addison's Flat, the'particulars of which have not reached us.
A northern exodus has commence'', and Auckland is the latest El Dorado' for our ever-shifting mining population. Without doubt, the news from the Thames is encouraging, but at the same time the field is very limited, as most of those now going will discover. Fortunately, the distance is not so great but that the wandorers may be able to retrace their steps, and we have every confidence that in a very short time we shall have a large proportion back again—poorer and wiser men.
The Freemasons of Westport are determined to celebrate the natal day of their patron saint most worthily, and on "Wednesday next, a ball in every way worthy of the order will be held in Westport. Particulars may be seen in our advertising columns, but we may add that the ball will be' in the truest sense of the word' respectable, and no one need fear that their wives or daughters can have cause to blush at the company they will there meet. The stewards have been most assiduous in their exertions to promote the comfort of the guests, and the ball will be, without doubtj the best by far that has ever been given in Westport.
