Halcyon, having completed her alternations, made a trip down the Manukau on Wednesday, with about sixty invited friends on board. She left the New Government Wharf at 11.20 a.m., and arrived at Cornwallis House, a distance of twelve miles, in one hour and a-half, against strong wind and flood-tide. The passage dout n for the first mile was squally, hut the weather then cleared up and the sun sent forth its genial rays, which made the excursion most enjoyable; andall on board expressedtheir delight, and complimented the owner of the little steamer, Captain Wing, in terms that must have been very satisfactory to that gentleman. The voyagers were landed at Cornwallis, wheie they enjoyed themselves roaming about the hills and valleys. An excellent luncheon was here provided, and afterwards the pleasuxe-soekers made the most of the day. A few brief remarks about the alterations may not be amiss in this place. The engines work past each other in driving the screws. They are upon the direct-action principle, and are placed obliquely thwart ship. The cylinders have a 9-inch bore, and a 12-inch stroke; average, 150 revolutions per minute. The screws have been altered from six to eight feet pitch, and made four inches larger in diameter and two inches longer. The new boiler was imported from Russell's, of Sydney, and is double the size of her former one."
