EDUCATIONAL COMMITTEE ELECTION.

meeting appointed to supply the vacancies in the Westport Education Committee caused by the retirement of Messrs Alcorn, Munro and Powell, as required by the Act, was held on Saturday last at the Court House at 12 o'clock, and a large number of persons attended. Mr W. Pitt was called to the chair, and introduced the objects of the meeting. Some discussion took place as to the mode of voting. On an appeal being made to the meeting, open voting was ■decided on. The Chairman then called on those present to nominate candidates. Mr Baliie proposed Mr James Powell, and thought that from the able ■and independent manner Mr Powell had previously acted, that they could not do better than select him again. Mr M'Nab seconded Mr Powell's nomination. Mr Tyler proposed Mr J. Munro. He paid a high compliment to Mr Munro's exertions since the establishment of the committee, and testified to the amicable manner in which the members had worked together since the first election. Mr Martin seconded Mr Munro.

Mr A. Brown proposed Mr "VV. B. Franklyn, and considered that from the past scholastic experience of that gentleman, the meeting could not make a better selection. Mr Fox seconded Mr Franklyn. Mr Franklyn proposed Mr E. Hankins. Mr Ehrenfried seconded the nomination. Mr M'Nab proposed Mr B - Alcorn. Mr Munro seconded the nomination. Mr Eraser proposed Mr H. Neil. Mr Campbell seconded Mr Neil. Mr Stitt proposed the Eev. W. Harvey. Mr Haskins seconded that gentleman.

This exhausted the nominations, and Messrs Bailie and Campbell were then appointed tellers. Mr Munro addressed the meeting before the voting took place, concluding by stating that if returned he should consider it equivalent to a vote of confidence, and if rejected to a vote of censure on his past conduct. The other candidates did not offer any remarks. A shoff of hands was then taken with the following result:—Powell 34 ; Munro 39 ; Franklyn 62 ; Hankins 20; Alcorn 37 ; Neil 12 ; Harvey 70. The Chairman declared the election to lave fallen on the Eev. "W. Harvey, Messrs Eranklyn and Munro. The Eev.W. Harveyreturned thanks for the honor, saying he was much obliged to those present for the confidence they had shown in him. He had had considerable experience eight or ten years in school work, and during that time had had boys under his own control. He would not therefore be ignorant of what was required, and would be able to see and judge how the school was conducted, and in its welfare he would ever take a deep interest.

Mr Franklyn thanked those present sincerely for the honor they had conferred, and might state that but for the conduct of the Committee, few would have been there that day, and he for one would not have been elected a member. He always thought, and did still think that Mr Eraser was entitled to some consideration. He did not say he was more talented than Mr

Phillips, but when 130 householders had signified their approval of his conduct, that should have been taken as conveying the wishes of the inhabitants of the town, that the appointment should be conferred on him. No doubt the letters in the Westport Times had induced many to come there that day and choose for themselves, and those elected that day represented the wishes of public opinion. He would only say that in another capacity he had always endeavoured to do his duty, and that he had done so to the satisfaction of the public, the meeting of that day proved. He concluded by. saying that he would to the best of his ability, diligently discharge his duties as member of the committee. MrMunro'acceptedthevoteof that clay as indicative of his having given satisfaction during hi- past career, and he would in future discharge the duties devolving on him with the same faithfulness as hitherto. The meeting separated after a vote i of thanks to the chair.
