With the exception of the course taken in reference to the Brunner Coal Mine, the business of the Provincial Council till Tuesday last, was not of material interest to the Coast. We extract all the items that have reference to this district from the Colonist :— BTTLLER RIVER. Mr Smith moved, and Mr Gibbs seconded, '' That his Honor the Superintendent be requested to withdraw from Reserve the two Islands on the Buller River, opposite Westport, and cause the same to be surveyed and offered for sale at Westport." The Provincial Secretary opposed the motion, thinking they should still be retained as a reserve. Motion lost. CHARLESTON. Mr Donne moved, and Mr Home seconded, —" That his Honor the Superintendent be requested to take the requisite steps to get Charleston made a Port of Entry and Warehousing Port."
The Provincial Secretary —■ The Government oppose the motion because it is not a port. The lion, member have worded his motion differently, ami have requested a vote of monoy to make it a port. (Hear, hear). I have heard one hon. member say he had walked all over the so-called harbor. (Laugliter). Mr Home admitted the harbor was not of the best, but he thought for the convenience of the settlers it should be declared a port of entry. Charleston transacted much more business than Woodpecker Bay, yet that was a port. He hoped the Council would, as an act of grace, permit the motion to pass. The Provincial Solicitor opposed the motion. Mr F. Kelling, Mr Dreyer, Mr Burn, and Mr Wastney spoke in favor of the motion. Motion carried.
