Iu reference to alleged new ground at the Caledonian we may say that Messrs Evans and Party have been prospecting for the last five weeks about this district, and have applied for protection for a water-race that was abandoned some time since. It is said they have got an indication of gold, and by Wednesday the truth will be known; beyond this there is no reliance to be placed on the report that new ground had been discovered ; the ground Messrs Evans are on, is situated at the other side of the Orawaite to the north-east of Q-erman terrace and in a line with Deadinan's Creek. The telegraph line we are happy to say is proceeding rapidly, and in spite of the late bad weather, all the heavy and most difficult portions have been completed. The line to Fox's will be perfected in fourteen days, and to Charleston by the end of the month. The completion from Charleston to Westport will take a very short time, and,
in four weeks wo may reasonably expect that that great blessing, telegraphic communication, with the other provinces of the colony, will be placed within our reach.
