CHARLESTON NEWS.

At the last weekly, meeting of the Hospital Committee the Secretary produced a copy of the rider attached to the verdict, returned by the jury impanelled to enquire into the cause of the late Constable Rhodes' death. The visiting members of Committee reported that in consequence of some information received, they had previous to the inquest made a special visit to the Hospital to enquire into the warder's conduct. They found the warder had as usual been constant and regular in filling his duties up to the day of Ehodes' death, and the day after. On the first named day he was not quite the same as usual, and on the second day there appeared reason to doubt his sobriety. A motion for his immediate discharge was negatived, and it was resolved that the warder be informed that he was charged with drunkenness, and the charge be next day investigated by a sub-committee. This investigation was made the following day and resulted in the warder's dismissal, and it will be seen by the advertisement, which appears in another column, that applications will be received by the Committee up to Friday next. It is satisfactory to know that Charleston still keeps up its high position as regards the large revenue derived from licenses, miners-rights, &c, &c, the returns of last month bearing favorable comparison with any that have gone before. The heavy weather has detained in the bay the schooner Fairy and cutter Harry Bluff ; the former vessel has had a new rudder fitted in place of the old one which was damaged on entering the port. There will be no Magistrate's Court here on Wednesday, in consequence of Mr Broad having to appear in a law case at Westport. The warder of the hospital begs to acknowledge a useful donation from Mr Denovan, tinsmith, in the shape of a large teapot.
