The heavy gale that set in from the N.W. on Sunday night and continued the groater part of yesterday, effectually prevented all chance of the Ada getting off'. The surf raised 'was tremendous, and the little boat was soon all but buried in sand driven up by the force of the sea. Whether it will be possible to relaunch her we cannot say, but the probability is that she has sailed her last cruise. "When she went ashore it Was ttearly, if not quite high water, and this, added to the sand tank already formed between her and the water lias apparently cut off her chance of escape. It is feared that the north-wester of Sunday night will again close the Hokitika bar. If this is the case two of our regular traders—the Nelson and John Penn —-now there, or that should be there, will be imprisoned till a heavy fresh releases them. It is most probable, however, that as soon as the sea goes down a little the dammed up volume of water will again force its way through the temporal'}' barrier. The weather, though squally and boisterous, has not been cold, and the quantity of rain that fell would not at. the temperature be converted into ice On the ranges, so a fresh may be safely looked for The Murray and Wallabi, undismayed by the threatening state of the weather, sailed for Nelson yesterday. The latter boat takes 90 tons of Grey coal to Nelson.
