VESSELS IN PORT. Ketches —Mary, Young America, Sea Breeze, Constant. Schooner —Louisa, Ada (on the spit). • Steamers—Southland, Murray, Wallabi. Our old friend the Southland, liar returned from 'her southern trip, and she certainly looks considerably weatherbcaten since her departure. Her first duty on her return will be to pull olf the Ada, schooner, which, we understand, she will attempt this morning's tide. Tlie particulars of her trip have already: been published, and her voyage round con- ' tains nothing worthy of special notice. The John Perm left at 12 o'eloek onSatur-, day night, taking with her a large number of passengers. As the Ilokitika : bar is once' more open, she will go on to Ilokitika. j The Kennedy left on Saturday forenoon; for Nelson, and may be expected to returnabout Wednesday. We are indebted to Mr Limbrick, purser of the Wallabi, for complete fdes of Greymouth papers. Wc should feci greatly obliged to other gentlemen, if they would obtain regular files at the various ports they leave, • for lately, on several occasions, this practice has been seldom adhered to.
We regret to record the stranding of the schooner Ada, on her return from Mokihinui with a cargo of coals. When crossing the liar yesterday, the wind fell light and she drifted on to the south spit, where she now remains. The harbor boat put oiF promptly to her assistance but could be of no service to her, and as the tide was ebbing she was soon left high and dry. The cargo will, we believe, be taken out, and the Southland, this moruing, will endeavor to pull her off, with, we are happy to add, every chance of success.
Pleasant Island.—The following letter from the mate of the schooner Kantipole, to : a resident in this city, illustrates a danger to which mariners in the Pacific Ocean are exposed. He writes : —" We passed close to Pleasant Island, near the equator. It being nearly calm, the natives came off to us in three large canoes, with about twenty men in each. We could not keep them from coming on board. They were all armed "with long knives, with which they at once set to work, cutting away a great deal of oiir runningrigging, and stealing it, together with our, grindstone, buckets, cook's utensils, and all other loose things they could find about the deck, even to the lead and lead-line. They; brought off cocoa-nuts, fowls, mats, shells, sinnet hats, and jarrog baskets, for which we exchanged tobacco, pipes, and old clothes; and what we woidd not exchange they would insist on helping themselves to, and being in such numbers resistance on our part was useless. The next day, a white man came off in a whaleboat. He told us he had been twentyone years on the island, and was married (after a fashion) to a native woman, and had seven children. lie said he was quite contented and considered the island his home.— " Melbourne Argus."
