CHARLESTON NEWS.

There is some talk of a Progress Committee being got up here, and there can be no doubt but that an institution of the kind would be very useful, by keeping a watchful eye upon the welfare of the district—encouraging, or if need be, initiating measures likely to advance its interests and removing obstacles and nuisances. A recognised body, such as the one indicated, even though without claim to any legal status, yet often possesses, in fact, considerable weight and authority, and, in the absence of municipal institutions, has elsewhere been found productive of good. Our distance from the seat of government, the precariousness of the means of communication, and our imperfect political representation, seem to point out the peculiar desirability of such a step being taken. There was a meeting advertised to take place on Tuesday evening, to consider the propriety of the public forming a co-operative society for the cheaper supply of bread, but there was no attendance except a few bakers, the public being either satisfied to pay their two shillings per loaf, or not caring about the matter sufficiently to got their feet wot by crossing the street.

The present rainy weather, though 'disagreeable enough in itself, is good for tho district, which may be said to live on surfaco water, tho dams having previously been empty and the miners complaining. ~Wo are sorry to learn that Mr Smith has left Gobb and Co's employ. He has driven the coach from this end ever since tho lino was started, and his general good qualities deservedly made him a favorite with'tho public.

"VVe understand that the Rov. Mr Harvey is to pay a visit to Charleston on Sunday next, and will hold at least one servico during the day, though neither time or place is as yet appointed. There was no Resident Magistrate'* Court held yesterday, in consequence of Mr Broad being detained at Brighton Only three cases were down on the list and they will be heard on Friday.
