VOLUNTEER MEETING.
A general meeting of the Charleston Rifle Volunteer Company, was held at Jolliffe's Hotel on Thursday evening, for the purpose of electing officers. Mr Lightband was requested to act as chairman and returning officer for the occasion. After some delay, arising from a misapprehension as to the hour of meeting, the proceedings commenced by the honorary Secretary, Mr Vorley, reading the minutes of the last general meeting, which were confirmed. The two nominees for the captaincy having retired from the room, an election by ballot was taken, and the result declared by the Chairman as under:— Bowman ... ... 21 Beverideje ... ... 11 On re-entering the room, Captain Bowman, who was received with great cheering, said: I have to return you my sincere thanks for the honour you have just conferred upon me. It is now some years since I served as a volunteer, and, consequently, I am rather rusty in my drill, but with close attention I hope to soon pick it up again. I again beg to thank you. Captain Beveridge said although Unsuccessful, ho was gratified with the
result of the election, as he fully believed Captain Bowman was the best qualified to fill the office. He hegged to thank the volunteers for proposing him and also for voting for him. The following were nominated for the lieutenantcy: Messrs. Donovan, Bain, Hamilton, Eurness and Williams, biit of these all withdrew excepting Eurness, who was therefore declared duly elected. Lieutenant Eurness said: I have great pleasure in accepting the appointment, and will do all I can to forward the interests of the Compay. For the appointment of ensign there were originally five nominated, viz., Messrs Collings, Price, Denovan, Jones and Davies, but Denovan withdrew, stating as a reason that several wanted him to stand 'for covering-sergeant. The result of this election was as under:— Price 13 Jones ... ... ... 11 Davies ... ... ... 1 Collings ... ... 1
Ensign Price briefly returned thanks. The Chairman after a few remarks, stated that he would still continue to swear in any volunteers who wished to join the company. He suggested that before dispersing, a time should be named for the next general meeting, as there would doubtless be a good deal of business of a preliminary nature to be got through in the way of framing bye-laws, &c. Captain Beveridge proposed that such a meeting should then be held, and that Captain Bowman take the chair. This, however, was not seconded. Mr Amos said a set of rules had already been drafted by the first committee. The Chairman said it had been suggested to him that advantage should be taken of the present full meeting, to pass a resolution fixing the rate of entrance fee and subscription, some expenses having been incurred which it w r ould be advisable to provide for. Mr Amos proposed that a recommendation of the committee, fixing the rate of entrance fee at half-a-crown, and subscription half-a-crown per month be adopted. Captain Beveridge proposed as an amendment, that the entrance fee be five shillings. After some discussion Mr Amos's proposition was carried. Some conversation ensued concerning the times of meeting, and of drill, &c. No date was fixed for the next general meeting, but it was arranged that drill should sontinue every night as usual.
