CHARLESTON NEWS.
A meeting of volunteers took place at Jolliffe'3 Hotel on Friday evening, for the purpose of receiving a communication from the Government. Captain Beveridge occupied the chair. Mr Lightband said he had that day received two copies of the Volunteer General Regulations along with the following letter which he read : "R.M. Office, "Westport, 2nd May, 1868. Sib, —In Mr Kynnersley's absence, I have the honor to inform you that a letter has been received from the Colonial Defence Office, stating that His Excellency the Governor, will be re commended to accept the services of the Charleston Company of Rifle Volunteers, and that the usual notification will appear in due course in the Gazette. The Under Secretary also states that the Company should now proceed to the nomination of officers that the names may be submitted to His Excellency's approval. It is also requested that the endorsed forms of requisition for arms may be filled up and returned. I also enclose two books of regulations for the use of the Company. I have the honor, &c, J. Giles, R. M. G. W. Lightband, Esq., "Warden, Charleston. After a little discussion it was resolved on the motion of Mr Bain, that a public meeting of Volunteers be called for on Thursday evening, at Jolliffe's Hotel, seven o'clock, for the purpose of swearing in Volunteers, and nominating officers. ♦
