Advices from the city of Mexico to the 10th ult., state that a plot to assassiuate President Juarez in the theatre and rob the treasury had been discovered, and several foreigners and military officers had been arrested. Monsignor Ferrari, the Pope's Minister of Finance, who is a prelate -without being a priest, refused the Cardinal's hat in consequence of his having contracted a morganatic or left-handed marriage. A correspondent at Home says that although it is now Carnival time, Rome is like a tomb; the theatres are deserted, and there are scarcely any foreigners in the city. The Abbe Eenard, the venerable cure of Sobencourt, France, was recently burnt to death. His body was found almost carbonised by the side of a stove at which he had been warming himself. The deceased had for some time past been blind and helpless. General Von Roon, the Prussian Minister of War, whn received a sum of 200,000 thalers (3 fr. 75 c. each) as a reward on the conclusion of the war, has devoted the amount to the creation of a family fund which is to bear his name. China is rapidly undergoing the process of civilisation. Beer has been successfully made at Shanghae, and a whisky distillery is being constructed. A New York exchange paper says : Accounts continue to reach us in regard to the late snow storm, which shows it to have been one of the most remarkable on record. It extended with the same features of wind and drifting, from far west of the Missouri River to the coasts of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The drifts in Albion, in this State, were from 15 to 25 feet deep in places.
That must have been remarkable dog -which strayed away without a head the other day according to tho advertisement: 'a sinail livor-coloured dog, with dark tan legs a>td head and tail cut off.' The want of a comma here quite obscures the point. When an Irishwoman applied for relief at Portland, tho committee asked :—" How many children have you ?" " Sixyour honour." • How old is tho youngest ?" "Mo youngest u dead, yor honour, but I've had auothor •moo ?"
