LOYAL DEMONSTRATION AT CALEDONIAN TERRACE

( CONTRIBUTED.) A meeting was held at Mr M'Farlane's Victoria Hotel, on Monday night for the puprose of getting up a loyal demonstration expressive of the joy felt by the inhabitants of the Caledonian at the escape of H. R. H. the Duke of Edinburgh from the dastardly attempt at assassination made on him at Sydney. Mr Hume was voted to the Chair, and after stating the object of the meeting in a few appropriate sentences introduced Mr Hunter who spoke as folfows :—"We have met here this evening for the purpose of shewing our loyalty not only to the Queen, but to every member of the Royal Family, and to shew our hatred of the assassin, who in such a cool-blooded manner attempted the life of the amiable, and beloved Prince Alfred. He proposed the first resolution as follows :—That the inhabitants of the Caledonian, march to the Buller on Thursday, and join the people of "Westport in their public rejoicing. Mr Smith seconded the resolution.

Mr. Sadler however in a humorous speech moved as an amendment :--That the people of the Caledonian get up a demonstration of their own, as they were numerous enough to do so. The amendment was after some little discussion carried unanimously. Mr Butler proposed that Messrs M'Farline, Braithwaite, Hunter, Webb M'Bae, Sadler, Hume, M'G-ill, and Steel act as a Committee to carry out the arrangements; this was unanimously carried.

A subscription list was then opened, and sent round the rooms, the parties present responding to the call in a right loyal manner, and in a short time sufficient was collected to meet any probable expences that might be incurred. A. vote of thanks was given to the Chairman for his kindness in presiding over the meeting ; to Mr M'Farlane for the use of his room, when with hearty cheers for the Queen and Royal Family, one tremendous cheer for the Duke of Edinburgh, the meeting broke up, everyone manifesting great glee at the anticipation of the coming event.
