CHARLESTON NEWS.
If the citizens of Westport are in earnest about Volunteering and get up a formation, we think it very likely the Charlestonians will not be behind hand in such a matter, but will create a corps that will be second to none in these parts, and bo a credit to the part.
The business of the R. M. Court lias rather decreased of late. Under ordinary circumstances such afact is to be looked upon as a satisfactory indication of the general soundness 01 trade. But we believe the slight falling off in the number of cases is due, more than anything else, to the belief that is gaining ground of the utter uselesness in most cases of a judgment where the amount is under £lO- The present law of arrest offers a positive premium for petty dishonesty. A man may have fifty small judgmentshanging over his head and yet walk the street with the] most perfect security. Indeed there is nothiug to prevent such a man from extending his peregrinations further abroad, and if endowed with a taste for travel as well as a disinclination to pay his debts, (not an uncommon combination,) he may easily enough make a pleasant tour through all NewZoalaud with probable benefit to his health and no harm whatever to bis pocket, for so long as ho takes care to keep the bills of the various tradesmen and hotel-keepers whom he favors with his patronage, under the magic £lO, he will meet with no unpleasantness or difficulty in the way, and may by the judicious disposal of his little purchases ot jewellry &c. <fca., be able to maiutain a sufficient supply of pocketmoney. "We trust to the honor of our readers not to make use of any suggestions contained in these few remarks. To tlie Editor of the Westport Times and Charleston Argus. Sir, —The annexed letter was sent to the Charleston Herald on Monday last, but as it has not appeared either in Tuesday's or Thursday's issue, I presume the proprietor does not intend to publish it- Your insertion thereof will oblige. Tours, &c. A. Bryce Bain. (3!b the of 'the Charleston Herald.) Sir, —The remarks put forth by you in the leading paragraph of to-day' issue again necessitate some comment for again do you furtively seek to insinuate that I endeavour to benefit the Wesport Times anb Charleston Argus at the expence of the Hospital, and to your own special detriment. For your information and that of the public, and as a sufficient reply to that insinuation I give an account af all printing expenses incurred' either by the Hospital Committee or by myself for concerts &c, for their benefit for the past five months. The following is the " Times " account:—
Note.—The account says 'Posters' but : they were the usual d. folio bills. With regard to the item in your account of £3. to which you call attention, I certainly objected to its being passed, first as being'an overcharge and second, becausa only half the number (fifty) were printed. The eool way in which after making a gross overcharge you take credit for forbearance in submitted to a reduction, is certainly amusing. I am, &c, A. Brycc Bain. Charleston, March 21.
