The Westport Times AND CHARLESTON ARGUS. FRIDAY, MARCH 27, 1868.
Want of space obliges us to withhold our usual leader. If anything wer
wanting to show the loyalty of the inhabitants of this district, the attendance at the Assembly-Rooms last night, to form a Volunteer Company, and to carry out the idea of a General Holiday would be proof sufficient. In another part of this issue a full report of the meeting will be found. Public Meetings. —We beg to draw the attention of the public to the advertisements of the meetings to be held this evening at the Assembly Rooms, relating to the Volunteer movement, and tho Public Demonstration at the escape of H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh. Mu Donne's Address at Addison's.—Wo are compelled from want of space, to withhold the report of this meeting until our next issue. Me Ryan's Reading at the Counr House—By advertisement elsewhere, we notice that Mr Ryan, so long known as a member of tho theatrical profession, both here and in Victoria, will give a reading from Dickens' Christmas Carol, with musical accompaniment, at the Court-houso to-night. From the known talent of tho gentleman, wo anticipate a treat, and hope that he will get the support the nature of the entertainment deserves. Closing op Mail at Addison's Flat,—By a postal notice in another column of this issue, we find that the Postmaster of Westport, has granted an extension of time for the closing of mails on Addison's Flat, and for the future on the day the mail is received from Westport, the return mail will not close until two p.m., thus leaving correspondents ample time to reply to any letters received by the same day's inward mail. Crown Grants of Land, in the Province of Auckland.—Mr Winstanley, the Postmaster of Westport, being in receipt of Auckland papers of a late date, one of which contains the list of persons to whom Crown grants have lately been issued in the province of Auckland, and knowing that several grants are for persons, known to be living in this neighborhood, has kindly posted the communication on the verandah of the post-office, and to it we direct the attention of any persons from the Auckland Province likely to be interested. Queensland. —In reference to this new field, the following account, the latest to hand we clip from the Nelson Colonist, of the 2-lth inst. We give it for w r hat it is worth: —" The cotton crop of Queensland is reported to be coming forward excellently. A telegram from Bowen, Queensland, dated March 7th, says:—" The diggings are turning out first-rate. The manager of the Joint Stock Bank, Cleveland Bay, paid them a visit, and bought 1000 ounces, and could have got 5000, but had not the money with him. Nuggets varying from twelve to forty ounces frequently found. The steamer Boomerang leaves to-day, and has upwards of 2000 ounces of gold on board. The aggregate of the Ballarat mining dividends for the last three months amounts to £200,000. News from Brisbane to March 9, states that the latest intelligence from the Nashville diggings is of a more satisfactory nature. At Flemington, Victoria, Mr Tait's stables were burnt down on March 7th. The racehorses Fireworks and Camden were rescued uninjured. Gold has been found on the Colan River, 50 miles from Gayndah, Queensland. The prospectors have exhibited fine specimens, and an acting Commissioner has been appointed.
