REPORTED ASSASSINATION OF THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH AT SYDNEY.
THREE SHOTS PIEED. ONE SUPPOSED TO BE PATAU By Electric Telegraph. [The following was issued as a West Coast Tijies Extra last evening : —] [froji our special correspondent.] Nelson, March 21, 3 p.m. By a special visit to the steamer John Perm, lying at the wharf at Stoke, and fi-om conversations with Captain Meikleham and other gentlemen on board, I learn further particulars that are apparenly too corroborative of the diabolical deed. The John Pemi left Melbourne on Thursday evening, the 12th, for Williamstown, and at that time their was a report in Melbourne to the effect that Prince Alfred had been shot by a Fenian, at Sydney ; but the atrocity of the deed was so great that it was deemed a canard on board. However, next inorning when the pilot came off, he brought the news, stating that the Sydney telegrams were posted up at both the " Argus" and "Age" offices; and there was great consternation and intense indiguation in Melboui*ne. It is said there were two or three shots fired, and the first, which, like the second, was fired at the Prince's back, took effect, and on the second or third (or if there were only one or two) ONE OF THE SLUGS OE BULLETS PENETEATED THE LUNGS. On the second shot takiug effect Prince Alfred THEE W UP HIS HANDS, and the assassin was seized. The shots were fired by a supposed Fenian, who was almost torn to pieces by the people, and was with difficulty rescued by the police.
