The screw-steamer Murray loft Nelson on Monday night with a general cargo and a few passengers. She experienced head wind and stormy weather, and came into port at 9.30 a.m. yesterday. Our old friend, the Bruce, came into port .yesterday at 2 p.m., landed her small cargo, and left again for Southern Ports same tide on her upward passage she put into none of the ports, and experienced rough weather. We extract from the West CoaM Times, of the 10th inst., the following history of her detention in Ilokitika, whilst waiting for repairs ; ' The little Bruce is again ataunto and ready for work, exactly three weeks having elapsed since she was towed in a cripple by the Li ness. This lazy period in our friend's .■■aw v can hardly be considered lost time, as ~;■ ng the arrival of the new shaft from M mrne, the Bruce was submitted to as t: ough an overhaul as could ba given her •afloat, and has been well scoured inside and out. We may remark that the original intention of welding the Bruce's broken shaft was departed from, as a new one that had been previously ordered was all but ready when the old shaft reached Melbourne, and moreover, the latter was hardly considered to be worth welding. Accordingly, the crank and wheel centre were taken off it, and shrunk upon the new shaft which was turned out of hand in ample time to save the Otago's departure for Hokitika. The work was superintended and guaranteed by Mr Matheson, chief engineer of the Bangitoto, and was further certified to by Mr Alexander Wilson, the Victorian Government Inspecting Engineer, who describes the shaft as being composed of the best wrought iron. Steam will be got rip on board the l3ruee this afternoon, and wo heartily hope she may long be spared another accident." The barque Helen S. Page arrived in Nelson from Newcastle, N.S.W., with 89 head of cattle, on March 16th. The screw-steamer Murray having discharged her passengers and cargo, left last evening for sGreymouth. The Maid of Erin is rapidly clearing, and tthe goods are turning out well conditioned.
