Buildestg.—The Custom-house is commenced, and the plates and piles are laid. —A well-known firm of gingerbeer manufacturers are clearing a section opposite the Orawaite Bridge as a site for an hotel.— Additions are being made to the Golden Hope Hotel.—Mr Tyler's new residence is completed; in the face of all this we need not despair of the future of Westport, as the sky is already clearing, and promises of times are even now looming brighter in the distance. Bailiff's Sale.—Yesterday Mr John Munro held sales, under bailiff's seizure, of the stock, furniture, &c , of the assembly rooms lately tenanted by Mr Stevei s.m nee Short; and also of the effects of the proprietor of the British American Hotel. The attendance at each was good. Sale at Mr Samper's Store.—We would particularly remind our readers that Mr John Munro, will commence the genuine clearing out sale of groceries, wines, spirits, ironmongery, &c. at the above store this day. A chance for the housewives of the Buller to lay iu a stock of general necessaries now presents itself and we will advise all those who wish to profit by this opportunity, in the words of the bellman, " to be in time."

Peel's Benefit.—Last evening, a fair attendance at Hamilton's Adelplii Theatre, testified to the approbation felt for the finished style of Messrs Peel and Coghlan's dancing. The wet evening prevented many of their patrons attending, but- those who were there gave frequent and hearty expression of their appreciation of the talented performers. Johnny Lockyer, as usual, did good service, and as " Shanghai Rooster, crowed the 1 judest of them all." Asr.iCA.BLB Reunion.—We noticed in our report of the services at the Catholic Chapel on St Patrick's Day, that several gentlemen, unconnected with the church, rendered material servicein the choir. After vespers some of the leading men of the Catholics invited the choir to meet them at Parer and Arenas' restaurant, where a cold collation awaited them. The topics of the day were discussed, aud a most pleasant evening was spent, free from any religious or political taint, and after the health of the guests had been drunk and heartily responded to, the members of this happy reunion separated, full of mutual congatulations at the success attendant on the opening of the first Christian Church in Westport. Bankruptcies.—We clip the follow-

Meeting of Council. —The Nelson] Eveniny Mail states that the Provincial Council will meet on Tuesday, the 21st of April. Census Returns.—The following is the return furnished by Government of the population of Westland North, by the census just completed. The Waimangorea number seems incorrect but we suppose the districts north of the Buller are induced in the return. Upper Buller, males 159, females 6 ; Wanganui, males 20 ; Mokihinui, males 560, females 54 ; AVaimangaroa, 454, females 14; Westport, males 1,112, females 838 ; Waite's, males 1,532, females 205 ; Charleston, males I'B9l, females .344 ; Brighton, males 1,012, females 251; Cobden, males 276, females 151 ; Inangahua, males 154, females 3 ; Little Grey, males 150, females 4 ; L Vloonlight, males 254, females 8; Twelve-mile, males 840, females 37; Upper Grey, males 372, females 30 ; total males, 9116 ; total females, 1,495; total number, 10,611. Weather. - - Heavy rain has fallen up country, and throughout Tuesday night aud portions of yesterday, showers prevailed in the Buller. In the face of all the bad weather we have had, it is rather annoying to read of the hot summer in Nelson and elsewhere, but hi re's a good summer time no doubt coming "if we wait a little longer." Queensland. —By latest advices from Sydney, the rush to Queensland is over, and many parties are leaving. The telegram that gives this news states, hat the cause of all this il the bad account given in several private letters, of the " duffing" nature of the new field. "A word to the wise"—let us hope our population will take it, and not be rash enough to " fly the ills they have, to go to others that they know not of."
