She left Wanganui at 1 p.m. on Thursday; experienced strong W.N.W. winds across the Straits, and head wind from the Cape. She crossed the bar at 11.30 p.m. on Saturday. The Challenge—the tug-boat belonging to Messrs Spence Bros.—came into port on Saturday from Hokitika, having the Maid of Erin in tow. Her destination is not yet decided on, although she is expected shortly to return to her old port. The brigantine Maid of Erin, in tow of the Challenge, crossed the bar at 11.30 p.m. on Saturday. She left Melbourne the 29th ult., and after a fine passage of 14 days, during which time she never took in sail, was safely berthed in our river. She called of Hokitika on her way here to make arrangements for being towed in. The John Bullock, belonging to Messrs Spence Bros., which has always been an unlucky boat, left Newcastle for Hokitika loaded with cattle, during the month of February. She got into a cyclone which brought so many vessels to grief on the New South Wales coast, and lost 77 head of cattle out of her cargo of 90. She put into Melbonrne, not thinking her small residue worth bringing on to Hokitika. The new steamer John Penn, the property of Mr Johnston, the cattle importer, is in Nelson, and may be expected here with her first load of cattle. The captain and mate of one of one of our well-known traders are expected to take charge of her. The P.N.Z. and A.E.M. Co.'s boat Otago passed our port on the night of Friday, the 13th. These mail boats seem quite to ignore the existence of Westport of late.
