BT ELECTRIC TEEEGEAPH. VICTORIA. Ballarat, February 15. A child named Gillies, nine years of age, was accidentally killed this morning. The child was with others playing in the goods shed of the Ballarat East Station, and getting on the line, its head was completely smashed in be* tween the buffers of two carriages. Death must have followed instantaneously. BmnNYONG, February 18. A man named Joseph Shaw was arrested to-day, at Watson's-hill, near Buninyong, charged with having murdered his wife, Mary Shaw. It is supposed that he kicked her in the abdomen. Two men named respectively Wattie Kelly were smothered to-day in a drive of the old Tynemouth shafts Watson'shill. The man Wattie has been taken out, but in a dying state. The other man has not yet been extricated. NEW SOUTH WALES. Sydney, February 15. The Australasian Steam Navigation Company's shares have further advanced in price. Sales have been made at £l3 10s, at which price they are now quoted. The Alexandra, s., sailed to-day with a large number of passengers for the diggings in the neighborhood of Maryborough. She had 150 passengers in the steerage. Two other steamers and some schooners have been laid on for the same place. Mrs Brown, paramour to Grardiner the bushranger, has attempted to commit suicide. February 17. Reports from the Hunter and Hawkesbury districts are to the effect that tbe heavy rains have swollen the rivers, and that the country on each side of their banks is flooded. Buskranging has been resumed in the Lachlan district. The Mudgee mail was stuck up by a gang of bushrangers and robbed on Saturday.
No intelligence has yet been received 'of the crew of the vessel found stranded •near Newcastle, and which was reported as that of the Wave, from Melbourne. The Government have sent boats by rail to Windsor to assist in saving the lives and property of those Avho are sufferers by the floods there. His Excellency Earl Belmore and the hon. James Byrnes, Secretary for Public Works, intend to visit Windsor this afternoon this afternoon to see the effects of the floods. Later news from the Hunter district states that that district is only partially flooded. Floods in the Country Districts. Windsor, 2 p.m. The agricultural districts around Windsor are flooded, and the maize :and other crops are submerged. Batiiurst, 11 a.m. The river is rising, and floods are shortly expected. Maitland, 4 p.m. The Hunter River is now eighteen feet above the usual level, and the. crops are flooded. At Singleton and Muswellbrook the river is falling. Sydney, February 18. The weather has moderated along, the coast. It is feared, however, that Ave have not heard the last of the casualties caused by the recent heavy "weather. Sydney, 19th February. The flood waters of the Hunter and Hawkesbury are fast subsiding. The country on their banks has, however, been submerged for a considerable distance, and a large quantity of maize has perished. Vincent W. Gihlin, Esq., manager of the Geelong branch of the Bank of Victoria, has been appointed manager of the Joint Stock Bank in Sydney. 7.30 p.m. : The Alarm, from Nelson, spoke the Japan on the the 12th, bound from Sydney to California. She wished to be reported all well. Sydney, February 20. Gold has been discovered in small quantities near Kiama. Portions of a Wreck, supposed to belong to a French vessel, have been found on the North Shore at Newcastle. At the wool sales to-day the prices realised show an improvement. Greasy brought very rates. Bum is worth 4s 9d. Brandy is very firm. The Isabella Brown, from Melbourne, bound to Japan, via Newcastle, arrived at the latter .port all : safe last night. SOUTH AURTSALIA. Adelaide, February 15. Another deputation from the farmers waited upon the Government to-day in respect to a supply of seed wheat, but the reply they got was similar to that given to the previous deputation. Government declines to take any action in the matter. The corn market continues very firm at our last quotations. During last week 1400 tons of cereals entered Port Adelaide. February 17. The settlement of the Northern Territory is now occupying the attention of the Cabinet. The statistics of the harvest 1 as fa as collected up to date, give an averagr yield of five bushels and a-half to acre. e The Hospital Committee have decided to adopt Dr Bleasdale's suggestion to substitute colonial for foreign wines for the use of the patients, and have chosen Boss's Highlecombe and Peake's red and white wines. Quotations for wheat are unaltered. February 18. B. Boothby, jun., Esq., late Commissioner of the Adelaide Waterworks, has been appointed a Superintending Surveyor under the Central Board of Main Boads. The Government remains firm in its determination not to supply the farmers with seed wheat. A deputation from the residents atMurchison presented a memorial to the Government to-day, requesting them to open up the route to Mount Murchison by sinking wells along the road. Febrnary 19. A case of sheep stealing of an extrordinsry daring character. Was investigated today. No fewer than 1400 sheep haa been stolen from a station near Kapunda. The thieves were convicted and sentenced. Good samples of wheat are very scarce, and full prices are asked. Lieut. Col. F. G. Hawley, officer commanding the troops here, was sworn in at four o'clock this aftorftoon as Acting-Governor.
