CHARLESTON NEWS.
"We have the pleasure to inform our readers that a Post-office Savings' Bank is now open here for the transaction of business. These institutions have been very successful in other parts of the colony, and although at the first glance it may appear unlikely that miners would leave the bank to which they sell their gold to deposit their money in the Post-office, it will probably happen that here, as elsewhere, there will be a number of persons who will gladly avail themselves of the peculiar advantages attached • to this new description of banking. A favorable feature in the system is that a depositor can continue his deposits at any other branch Post-office Bank, and can withdraw his money at whichever Post-office Bank is most convenient to him. In the case of a married woman depositing money, it will be repaid to her, unless her husband gives notice, in writing, of marriage, and claims payment of deposits. The Empire Bijou Theatre, belonging to Messrs Nahi and Curtis, were offered at auction en Tuesday after-
noon by Mr T. Dwan. The bidding commenced at £3OO, and soon ran up to £4OO, but there being a dispute about the last bid, tlio auctioneer withdrew the property from further competition. We hear that a small steamer named the Clyde, at present in Auckland, is likely soon to make her appearance as a local trader in these waters. Our old friend the Halcyon, has not yet received her boiler, and consequently still remains at the Manukau. The enforced removal of a number of half verandahs, though considered vexatious at the time, has certainly improved the appearance of Princesstreet and the lower portion, through the cutting down to the bay, has been materially improved by having water channels laid down on each side, and the whole roadway fresh gravelled. Beyond the departure of the Fancy for Onehunga, there has been nothing doing in the Bay since Monday, though the bar is good enough for vessels to work it were any at hand.
