The schooner Escort, with 37 passengers on board, was towed over the bar yesterday by the Southland bound for Newcastle, having changed her destination from Maryborough. The steamship Kennedy left Hokitika at 0.30 a.m. on Wednesday, crossed the bar at Greymouth at 12, discharged cargo, left the Grey at 1 p.m. on Thursday, and arrived in the Buller at 10 p.m. She brings 10 saloon, 20 steerage, and 16 Nelson passengers. By her we have lata files of Grey and liokitika
papers. The steamer Southland will be despatched for Hokitika at 11 a.m. this day. The Canterbury, schooner, an old trader to our port from Wanganui, has fallen a prey to the late gales which have swept over New Zealand. By the Nelson Examiner, of 20th ulfc., we learn —" That whilst on her voyage from Wanganui to I )amaru she came on shore in two pieces, We have not learned tho fate of the crew." By later advices in the West Coast Times we hear that a favorable report of the schooner Canterbury is published in the Wellington Independent. "It will be recollected that the Canterbury got ashore under Cape Campbell during the gale of the 3rd inst., and that tho steamer Egmont was engaged to tow her off again. This was accomplished, and the Canterbury was then taken to Wellington, placed upon the slip and overhauled, and fonnd to be but very slightly damaged.
