The Westport Times AND CHARLESTON ARGUS. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 1868.
It will be seen by reference to our summary of English news that it is of the most startling character, and that Penianism is shaking and alarming England to its centre. The Fenians seem to have adopted tactics of, to say the mildest, a most reprehensible kind, and blowing-up and assassinations seem to be the order of the day, while in Limerick the priesthood have mixed themselves up with the matter. . For the first time for some hundred years has the Sovereign of England ; had to be guarded in her home by I 1 troops, while men-of-war are anchored round the Isle of Wight. Such pro- ' ceedings as these cannot but be deplored by any right thinking man, as they only tend to gender a spirit inimical to the interests of both the English and Irish race. Already have arrests been made of the principal newspaper leaders of the disaffected party, prominent among whom stands Mr Piggott, son of the late Lord Chief Baron. We only hope that this parricidal proceeding may be stopped, as it will only end in disappointment and disaster.
