CHARLESTON NEWS.
Tenders have been accepted for llio erection of a dwelling-house for our new postmaster, Mr Alexander, also for a survey-office. Of the tenders for the former building, the highest was £2lO, and the lowest £135. There was not so great a difference in the tenders for the survey-office, which varied from £63 to £62. Mr Pawson was the successful tenderer in both cases. The private theatrical entertainment for the benefit of the hospital is arranged to take place at the Empire Theatre, on Tuesday next. " Time Tries AH" is the play which has been selected for the occasion. The usual weekly meeting of the Charleston Hospital took place on Thursday evening, when tenders for the supply of provisions for the next three months were opened, and those of Messrs D. Henderson, Shephard & Co., M'Farlane and Co., and Portman, accepted. The visiting committee reported there were six patients at present in the ward. One of the most numerously attended and successful christenings which has yet taken place in this district, came off at Hargreaves Terrace, on Thursday afternoon. The weather was all that could be desired for such an occasion, and in addition to a large concourse of the male sex, there was an unusual display of the fairer portion of creation, all which tended to augment the enjoyableness of the outing. The machine, which was christened the " Rising Sun" in the usual manner, by Miss Grriffen, is on the claim of Mcßride and party, and consist of a battery of five stampers. The sub sequent toasting of healths and other amusements were presided over by Mr Sutton, as chairman, and the party assembled appeared thoroughly to enjoy themselves. On starting to return home the ladies were respectively intercepted at the adjoining claim of Alec Thompson and Mylchrist, and invited to re-christen, in a ' legitimate ' manner, the steam machinery which only a few days ago was christened the " Golden Point," by a gentleman - As the proprietors seemed to think they could not prosper unless the ceremony was performed by a lady, one of the party kindly officiated as sponsor ; and after partaking of the abundant supply of refreshments again offered, proceeded on their voyage home. The s.s. Kennedy called off the port on "Wednesday afternoon and communicated with the shore by boat.
