The Westport Times AND CHARLESTON ARGUS. SATURDAY, JANUARY 25, 1868.
After hearing Mr Crate last evening we can only arrive at the conclusion that we had already formed that he is not the man for AVestport. Specious and unscrupulous he hesitates at nothing which he conceives may damage his opponent, while with a Jesuistical sophistry he endeavors to cajole any elector whom he thinks may be opposed to him. " Promise everything," seems to be his motto, and there can be no doubt but that he merely regards an election pledge as somethsng that may be thrown aside if convenient to his interest to do so. With regard to Mr Graham, we think that though possessing a certsin amount of ability, much greater than what a number of people originally gave him credit for, he is not a desirable candidate. Mr Thomas Groodwin is evidently a novice, and although undoubtedly honest in his intentions, and possessing a very good idea as to the wants and requirements of the district, yet, he is hardly up to the mark. With regard to Mr Smith, the same almost might be said of him as of Mr Groodwin, but he appears to be more at ease on the subjects with which he proposes to deal; and therefore we think that Mr Smith is the " fit and proper person."
