MOKIHINUI.
Our latest news from Mokihinui is of a .desponding nature —most of the miners and a great many of the business people have already left, and if Borne new auriferous ground is not shortly discovered, the rest of the population will soon follow suit. The claims at work on the North, South, and Middle Terraces are nearly worked out, and there are only seventeen ; laims at work at the present time. The ru:h rhat took placu on the flat at the back of the township has proved
a complete failure. The news from up the river is of a very uncertain character, in fact, no reliable information is to hand respecting it. There are some 60 or 70 miners prospecting in this locality and on the terraces, but as yet gold has :tiot been found in payable quantities, although some little coarse gold has been brought down by different parties which augurs favorably for future. The rush to the terrace on the north side of the Mokihinui river is about two miles from the township. The prospectors have driven a tunnel into the terrace, and found payable gold. They were in Mokihinui on Saturday, 11th inst., and purchased the iron-work for building a truck. Nearly every one of the miners and some of the business people have already been out to take up claims, and some of them have a very favorable opinion of the place, and state that if this terrace should turn out well, there is no doubt but a large rush will take place, as there are a great number of terraces of equally good appearance. Up to the present time there is no place of business on the ground, and most probably will not be until the ground is proved to be payable, as it is almost impossible to get stores on the ground, as the track at the present time is difficult enough for a man to get over, and perfectly impossible for horses.
